FIELD GUIDE

The story

Six quail, far larger than any real ones, head into Naranja Park in Oro Valley with a kite, a skateboard and a soccer ball. The family of sculptures was unveiled in August 2015, and Tucson Local Media reported at the time that it was 'conceptualized, planned and built' by local students under the mentorship of two Tucson artists, Jason Butler and Hiro Tashima. It was a partnership between the Southern Arizona Arts and Cultural Alliance, the Town of Oro Valley and the Pima Association of Governments, whose Transportation Art by Youth program puts public art into transportation areas. Tucson Local Media called the piece 'Quail Trail'; the Town of Oro Valley, in a 2025 news item, lists it as 'Covey of Quail' at the southern entrance to Naranja Park, a Youth Art Project.
Butler told the paper that each bird has a steel skeleton with foam built up around it and a layer of concrete over the whole, set on an engineered footing underground. He pointed to details such as skateboard wheels that really turn, a hat that looks as if it clips together, raised helmet straps and plumes. Oro Valley's mayor said at the dedication that the town needed 'destination pieces and projects' and hoped people would drive up just to have their picture taken.
