FIELD GUIDE

The story

A four-legged beast of stainless steel with glass-tipped feelers, Poppy stands over the Lincoln City Cultural Center's grounds in the Delake area, and it is meant to be pushed. The Cultural Center says that giving it a nudge makes the glass pieces in its antennas gleam.
Sculptor Pete Beeman, who is from Portland, told the Newport News-Times that the design came from the Oregon coast: Dungeness crab, octopus and the many limbs of beach insects and grasses. The two fused-glass leaf shapes at the top were made by Lincoln City artist Kelly Howard and Kerstin Hilton of Portland, in a nod to the town's glass-art focus. The sculpture is deliberately asymmetrical, with an off-centre ring holding the moving part and four legs that each differ. It measures 8 feet deep, 15 feet wide and 24 feet high. He named it after his late mother's childhood nickname.
