FIELD GUIDE

The story

This sculpture is titled "Pittsburgh", but it is better known by a nickname. John Henry's "Pittsburgh" is known as the French Fry sculpture, after the long squared-off yellow forms that The Pittsburgh Orbit blog in 2016 described as piled "as if tossed directly from roiling oil bath to serving tray by a giant".
Henry made it in 1977 for the Three Rivers Arts Festival's Sculpturescape project, one of four sculptors invited. His website says the works were built with donated materials and funded by local industries, among them Alcoa and National Steel, and that he finished his in a month. After the year-long exhibition, a major collector bought the sculpture and gave it to the city. The Incline reported in 2019 that it first stood near the University of Pittsburgh's Hillman Library before moving to Frank Curto Park, above the Strip District, and that the city still owns it.

WHAT TO EXPECT
An abstract sculpture in Frank Curto Park, reached from Bigelow Boulevard. A May 2026 park guide describes it as bright yellow and the park as difficult to reach, with a narrow, crumbling sidewalk from Polish Hill and views over the Strip District and Allegheny River.
ACCESS
Frank Curto Park lies along Bigelow Boulevard. In 2019 the city's public works director said cars can enter the park but re-joining the road can be stressful; a May 2026 guide describes a tight access road and a crumbling sidewalk.
