FIELD GUIDE

The story

For more than 20 years a pair of giant Heinz ketchup bottles poured red on the scoreboard at Pittsburgh's football stadium. In December 2023 one was set on a pedestal on the street outside a museum in the Strip District.
According to 90.5 WESA, the motorized bottles, complete with labels and white caps, were removed from the stadium in 2022 when Heinz, now Kraft Heinz, gave up the naming rights and Heinz Field became Acrisure Stadium. One was reinstalled at the stadium in 2023. Kraft Heinz donated the other to the Senator John Heinz History Center, and crews set it on a custom steel pedestal on a Thursday in December 2023. Pittsburgh Magazine described the 35-foot bottle sitting in a notch in the museum's facade on Smallman Street near 12th Street, its label facing downtown. WESA reported that the cap tops out at 57 feet, a nod to Heinz's "57 Varieties" slogan. WESA said it became the largest item in the museum's collection.
