The story
In 2011 the Arizona Daily Star called Michael A. Perry Park “nearly invisible” and reported that artists and recent high school graduates were building a new marker at the corner of East Golf Links Road and South Pantano Parkway to replace a plain brown sign.
The Tucson Pima Arts Council funded the $25,000, two-month project, overseen by the artists Jason Butler and Hirotsune Tashima. It combined a 7-foot jackrabbit holding a basketball on a 16-foot concrete baseball bat, a 52-inch tortoise and an 8-foot stack of metal blocks intended to spell “park”. The bat reflects the park’s Little League use and the basketball its courts. The animals were carved from foam, framed in metal and covered in concrete. “We wanted them to be of the desert,” Butler said.
