FIELD GUIDE
The story
A water tower shaped like a giant peach stands on Interstate 65 just outside Clanton, Alabama, in a county known for its fruit. The Encyclopedia of Alabama says the tower celebrates the importance of the peach industry to the city and the county. Its Chilton County entry says that over 80 percent of Alabama's peach crop comes from the county, which has sponsored the Chilton County Peach Festival since 1947.
The encyclopedia's photo entry describes a 120-foot tower holding 500,000 gallons, built in 1992 by the Chicago Bridge and Iron Company. Its separate Clanton article gives a different date, saying the tower was built in 1994, and describes it as constructed and painted in the shape of a giant ripe peach. That article also notes that the city holds an annual Peach Festival in June.
