FIELD GUIDE
The story
Black Renaissance, by artist Rayvenn D'Clark, was on view among the sculptures at Freedom Monument Sculpture Park in Montgomery, Alabama, when Burnaway reviewed the park in 2024.
The Equal Justice Initiative describes the park as a 17-acre site overlooking the Alabama River. Writing in Burnaway in August 2024, after visits in April and June of that year, Whitney Washington dated the work to 2023 and described "five nine-feet-tall dimpled bronze heads" created from three-dimensional scans of live Black models. Washington called the work "imposing and regal" and said it sets the tone for many of the pieces in the park.
