This Big Thing is recorded as still being here.
Pasaquan is a seven-acre visionary art environment about eight miles outside Buena Vista, Georgia, built by Eddie Owens Martin (born 1908), who called himself St. EOM. In 1956, after twenty-one years in New York, he returned to his late mother's farm and went on to build six significant structures with mandala murals and more than 900 feet of painted masonry walls. Columbus State University, which says the design blends pre-Columbian Mexican, African and Native American symbols, has stewarded the site since it was given to the university in 2016 after a Kohler Foundation restoration. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (reference 08000833, 2008).

FIELD GUIDE

The story

St. EOM, born Eddie Owens Martin, spent about 21 years in New York before a vision sent him home to a farm in Georgia, where he built the painted environment of Pasaquan.
Columbus State University says Martin was born on July 4, 1908, and that after a vision in 1935 he took the name St. EOM and developed a belief system called Pasaquoyanism. In 1956, after his mother's death, a vision told him to return to her farm, about 8 miles outside Buena Vista. For the last three decades of his life, the university says, he built Pasaquan there. It says the design combines pre-Columbian Mexican, African and Native American symbols with motifs from James Churchward's book The Lost Continent of MU.
