FIELD GUIDE
The story
The Jimmy Carter Peanut is a smiling peanut built for a campaign rally. NPPlan, an unofficial guide to Jimmy Carter National Historical Park, says three members of the Indiana Democratic Party made it for a political rally in Evansville in the 1976 presidential campaign. After the rally it was shipped to Plains and placed at the railroad depot, which served as Carter's campaign headquarters.
NPPlan, updated in April 2025, gives its height as thirteen feet and says the Plains Historical Preservation Trust maintains it. A 2023 travel piece describes a frame of hoops and chicken wire covered in polyurethane foam. It and Roadside America report that a car knocked the peanut over in 2000 and that it was repaired. According to the travel piece, it was moved after that accident to its present spot on Georgia 45 near Carter's church; Roadside America places it at the north end of town.
