FIELD GUIDE

The story

Fort Stockton's mascot is a roadrunner far larger than any real one. Paisano Pete stands at the corner of Main Street and Dickinson Boulevard, 11 feet tall and 22 feet long from beak to tail, according to Texas Highways. "Paisano" is a nickname for the roadrunner, meaning "countryman" in Spanish, the magazine notes.
The statue is fibreglass. KMID/KPEJ reported in 2023 that it was bought from a company in Wisconsin and that a "Name the Roadrunner" contest was held to name it. Texas Hill Country called the statue the brainchild of Fort Stockton Mayor Gene Cummings. The date varies: KMID/KPEJ says Pete has been in the town since 1979, while Texas Highways says he was erected in 1980.
