FIELD GUIDE
The story
Birds had worn the gold off the top of the head of the figure on Oregon's Capitol dome, so in July 2025 crews began putting it back. The Oregon Pioneer, also called the Gold Man, is a bronze statue of a pioneer holding an axe, with a tarp or wagon cover over one shoulder and a tree stump behind him. The sculptor was Ulric Ellerhusen, and the figure was shipped from the East Coast via the Panama Canal, according to the Oregonian.
The Capitol itself was rebuilt after a 1935 fire. Architectural Resources Group says it was completed in 1938 to a design by Francis Keally with Trowbridge & Livingston, and describes the dome as a stripped-down cylinder with murals celebrating Oregon's pioneer heritage.
