FIELD GUIDE

The story

Olive is a much larger-than-life Friesian, and she has stood outside the Whareroa dairy complex near Hāwera for about thirty years.
Whareroa is one of the largest dairy processing sites in the world, taking milk from across South Taranaki, and Olive marks the intersection of State Highway 3 and Whareroa Road where the traffic turns in. She is corporate signage at monumental scale – the plant announcing what it does with a single object, in a district where dairying is not one industry among several but the industry.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Olive is the much larger-than-life Friesian cow that has stood at the Whareroa dairy complex for about three decades. Current 2025 RNZ coverage confirms she remains outside Fonterra Whareroa, while 2024 reporting places her specifically at the SH3/Whareroa Road intersection.
ACCESS
Industrial-site roadside landmark at the SH3/Whareroa Road entrance to Fonterra Whareroa. The factory is not open to the public. Treat the site location as a site-level landmark location only; no visitor parking or roadside stopping point is recommended until a lawful photo-stop is confirmed.
