FIELD GUIDE
The story
Oak Ridge Winery's tasting room is inside a 50,000-gallon redwood wine tank, so visitors taste Lodi wines standing within what was once a storage vessel. According to Visit Lodi, the tank, called Das Weinhaus, was originally used for wine storage and has welcomed guests for tastings since 1965. The Lodi Winegrape Commission says earlier owners nicknamed it Das Weinhaus, or "The Wine House".
The winery around it dates to 1934. The Commission describes Oak Ridge as the oldest operating winery in Lodi, once a winemaking cooperative, which the Maggio and Reynolds families purchased in 2001 and renamed. The families began a major renovation in 2002, turning it into a modern production facility. Oak Ridge's own site presents the Maggio family's winegrowing history as beginning with Angelo Maggio, who immigrated from Italy in 1906, and Visit Lodi says the winery farms 2,500 acres of vineyards.
