The story

A bronze statue of a Navajo code talker stands at Wesley Bolin Memorial Plaza, in front of the Arizona State Capitol in Phoenix. Indian Country Today reported that the 16-foot statue was presented on February 28, 2008, and shows a code talker kneeling on one knee and speaking into a transmitter radio. It says 29 Navajo recruits first developed the code, with about 400 more serving later.
A 2007 report, reposted on the Newspaper Rock blog, said the Navajo Nation Tribal Council had voted $200,000 to the Navajo Code Talkers Memorial Foundation for an 8-foot statue replicating one at Window Rock, which differs from the 16 feet Indian Country Today reported. An American Legion report places a Navajo Code Talker Day ceremony at the plaza on August 14, 2026.
