A statue roughly 30-40 feet tall, built by an artist in his own backyard in the Kings Park neighborhood of Springfield, Virginia, has drawn Catholic pilgrims who believe its form resembles the Virgin Mary. The artist himself describes the piece as a tribute to motherhood generally rather than a religious image, saying he originally modeled its draped form after Muslim women's dress; the statue has also drawn concern from neighbors in the residential community.
