FIELD GUIDE
The story
Two life-size elephants made from an invasive weed stand in the front garden of the Sonoma Community Center.
Moringa and Marigold are based on a real mother elephant and her adolescent calf, according to the Sonoma Index-Tribune, and each piece is named for the elephant that inspired it. They were handmade by The Real Elephant Collective, which the Community Center describes as 200 Indigenous artisans from the Bettakurumba, Paniya, Kattunayakan and Soliga communities of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve in Tamil Nadu, India. The Center says the collective has spent five years sculpting the elephants it lives alongside.
