FIELD GUIDE
The story
Three times life size and straining at a hand-operated press, the Grape Crusher stands, according to Wine Spectator's Napa Valley Guide, at the southern gateway to Napa Valley. The guide calls it one of the valley's best-known landmarks, erected in May 1988 on a hill just east of the Napa River Bridge at Vista Point Park.
The sculptor was Gino Miles of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Visit Napa Valley says he worked on the figure for almost ten months at a total cost of $250,000. The Napa Valley Register reported developers planned the work for $150,000. The tourism body describes a vineyard worker in a wide-brim hat with both hands on the handle and one foot braced against the basket, and says the statue weighs 6,000 pounds and stands 15 feet high excluding a six-foot base, 18 feet if it were upright. Its hat measures four feet across.
