FIELD GUIDE
The story
The Discover Pocahontas County tourism site lists a 25-foot statue of Pocahontas at the eastern edge of the town of Pocahontas, Iowa, on Highway 3. The site says it welcomes visitors and residents to town. SAH Archipedia, citing Buildings of Iowa (1993), dates the roadside souvenir stand and its statue to 1958. It describes a steel and wood frame sheathed in concrete, designed by W. C. Ballard, who also designed the giant muskie and Paul Bunyan's sweetheart figures in Minnesota, and quotes the authors of Buildings of Iowa, who call it "unquestionably one of Iowa's major monuments of programmatic architecture". The county site says Princess Park around the statue also has a teepee, murals and a historic cabin of county stories and artifacts, and the City of Pocahontas lists the Pocahontas Hometown Pride Log Cabin Museum in the same park.
