The story
Mabel stands at the southern entrance to Morrinsville, and she is the largest member of a herd.
Morrinsville is dairy country in the middle of the Waikato, and the town has built an unusually committed piece of civic identity out of that. The first painted cow sculptures appeared in the streets in 2015. There are now around sixty life-size cows scattered through the town, individually decorated and individually named, with the naming doing a lot of the work: Picowsso, Peek-a-Moo, Accowtants, Moo World Stampede. The Herd of Cows is a trail, and Mabel is its gateway.
The distinction matters when you arrive. The smaller painted cows are life-size and everywhere; Mabel is the oversized one, positioned outside Power Farming at 86 Thames Street where traffic comes into town from the south. She is the announcement, and the rest of the herd is the town.
What makes the scheme work better than most public-art trails is that it is not decorative in origin. Dairying is the actual economy here, and the cows were installed as a nod to that history rather than as an unrelated beautification project. A town that milks cows put up cows, then let its residents and businesses paint them.
One more piece of local scale is worth knowing while you are in the district: near Morrinsville, the Tatua Co-operative Dairy Company's factory carries a twelve-metre whipping cream can. The Waikato does not do this by halves.
There is a serious economic fact underneath the whimsy. The Waikato carries one of the highest concentrations of dairy cattle anywhere in the world, and Morrinsville sits close to the centre of it. New Zealand's dairy sector is the country's largest goods export earner, and towns like this one exist because of it – the farm supply businesses, the vets, the machinery dealers, the transport operators.
Mabel stands outside a farm machinery firm, which is exactly right. The cow is the product of the district, and the tractor dealer is who pays for the sign.

Mabel the Mega Cow remains the landmark at 86 Thames Street in Morrinsville. Current tourism and attraction sources identify that address, and the catalogue now uses a map-checked site point rather than the former materially misplaced two-decimal town anchor.
ACCESS
Mabel the Mega Cow stands at 86 Thames Street in Morrinsville. The object is now map-checked to the correct host site, while direct navigation intentionally remains to the map-checked Morrinsville Information Centre at 251 Thames Street as a visitor base for the Herd of Cows trail until a closer lawful parking/arrival point beside Mabel is independently verified.
