FIELD GUIDE

The story

Tulsa’s stretch of Route 66 near the Meadow Gold neon sign has a growing cluster of fibreglass giants, and Meadow Gold Mack is its lumberjack. According to the Meadow Gold District, Mack began life in the 1960s in front of a lumberyard in Crystal Lake, Illinois. Like many giants, he was later sold and moved, and he spent a few years stored in a Tulsa warehouse before being “brought back to life in 2024” outside Meadow Gold Mack’s Route 66 Outpost, a retail shop. The district says he stands 20 feet tall and that his custom axe was made by giant-maker Mark Cline.

Local outlets reported the installation in August 2024. Route 66 News described a 20-foot Muffler Man erected on a Wednesday, the third on that stretch after Buck Atom and Stella Atom at Buck Atom’s Cosmic Curios; News on 6 said the figure was originally built in Illinois in the 1960s. Tulsa People reported in June 2024 that the shop’s owner had been offered the use of a 20-foot lumberjack kept in a developer’s warehouse, together with the retail space.

The shop and statue are named for the nearby Meadow Gold sign. Route 66 News says the sign was built in 1934 along Route 66, taken down, restored and re-erected down the street in 2009. The district says Mack is surrounded by a mural of a forest and mountains, and invites visitors to look for Bigfoot in it.

In September 2025 Route 66 News still counted Mack among the district’s giants, alongside Buck Atom, Stella Atom and Cowboy Bob, with a fifth, Rosie the Riveter, then expected. The shop is at 1306 E. 11th St., west of the neon sign.
