FIELD GUIDE
The story
A 28-foot stainless steel robot kneels beside Greensboro’s Downtown Greenway and waves to people passing on the trail, with a giant bee-like insect perched on its head. The work is “May-Bee and the Bot (In the Uncanny Valley)” by Pete Beeman, a Portland-based artist and engineer.
WUNC reported on 9 February 2026 that Beeman had completed the installation over the previous weekend, attaching the Bot’s left leg on Friday 6 February. He said it had taken about a year from first conversations to setting a 3,000-pound sculpture in the ground. The project was funded by the nonprofit Cemala Foundation and others.
