FIELD GUIDE

The story

Kehinde Wiley's Rumors of War puts a young African American rider in urban streetwear on a massive bronze horse, in direct answer to Richmond's Confederate monuments.
The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts said the sculpture was permanently installed at its entrance on Arthur Ashe Boulevard on 13 December 2019, with a crowd it estimated at more than 5,000 at the unveiling, which included remarks from Wiley, Virginia's governor, Richmond's mayor and the museum's director. It was first shown in Times Square on 27 September 2019, in a partnership between Times Square Arts, Sean Kelly Gallery and the museum. The museum describes it as Wiley's first monumental public sculpture and gives the patinated bronze work, on a stone pedestal, as 27 feet 4 7/8 inches high overall.
