The story
As fit as a Mallee bull is one of the most durable phrases in Australian English, and Birchip has built the bull.
Big Red has overlooked the main street since 1991, standing at 26–28 Cumming Avenue in the centre of town. The Mallee is hard, dry, sandy country in Victoria's north-west, and the idiom carries the whole point of the place: an animal that thrives there is tough beyond ordinary measure. A town in the middle of that country putting up an oversized bull is not making a joke about scale so much as claiming a reputation.
The name has local roots that predate the sculpture by a century. Visit Buloke records that in the 1890s the lessee of a large landholding within the Shire of Birchip would take cattle from a wild mob led by a beast known as Big Red. The statue carries that name forward.
Birchip is a cropping town now more than a grazing one – the Birchip Cropping Group is a nationally recognised farming-systems research body based here – so the bull commemorates an older layer of the district's working life as much as its current one.
It has done well as an attraction. The regional tourism body describes it as having become a destination in its own right, and it anchors a town centre that also carries a street-art trail. It remains standing and confirmed by recent visitor evidence.
The catalogue holds this record at locality-level mapping until the object and a safe arrival point can be independently pinned.

Visit Buloke and Birchip community sources identify Big Red as a town landmark dating from 1991, and recent visitor evidence confirms the sculpture remains standing. The sculpture itself is independently map-checked on the Cumming Avenue median at approximately -35.982134, 142.917587; only the preferred visitor parking/arrival remains unresolved.
ACCESS
Big Red is independently map-checked on the Cumming Avenue median in central Birchip at approximately -35.982134, 142.917587. This is the sculpture point, not a vehicle destination. General parking is documented in Cumming Avenue and Glowery Street, but a specific preferred lawful visitor parking point has not yet been independently pinned, so direct navigation remains withheld.
Current local first-party/community destination page says the Mallee Bull has welcomed visitors since 1991 and is a destination in its own right, suitable for a selfie stop. It supports current presence/visitor context, not numeric geometry.
