FIELD GUIDE
The story
Chris Fussell spent two years on his second giant kookaburra, and finished it in April 2025.
The steel bird now marks the new Kooka's Country Cookies factory precinct at 56–58 Racecourse Road in Donald, in the Victorian Wimmera. It is the sculptor's second work on the subject – he made an earlier Big Kookaburra at Kurri Kurri in New South Wales – and by his own account the appeal is in the making rather than the subject: he describes trying to capture the childlike joy of creating, pushing the medium to the limits of control, in a relationship between subject, medium and self that keeps shifting.
