FIELD GUIDE

The story

A 33-foot man stands just inside the gate at Laguna Gloria, looking at the sky, and the first thing to learn about him is what he is made of.
Looking Up is by the American artist Tom Friedman, who makes a series of figures that artnet describes as formed from crushed aluminum foil roasting pans. Artnet reported in February 2015 that this one would be cast in stainless steel. The Contemporary Austin commissioned it after Friedman made several visits to the 14-acre site, and artnet described it as his first attempt to render one of the roasting-pan works at monumental scale. The museum's director called it the largest sculpture installed at the museum and said the figure "stands as if in sudden wonder at something he perceives above and perhaps beyond our view". It was scheduled to be unveiled on 9 May 2015.
