FIELD GUIDE
The story
Passengers collecting their bags at Sacramento International Airport do it under a 56-foot red rabbit that seems to have bounded in from the fields and is diving toward a granite suitcase on the floor. "Leap" by Denver artist Lawrence Argent hangs in Terminal B, the centerpiece of the $1 billion terminal that opened on 6 October 2011, and it quickly picked up the nickname the Hare-port.
The Associated Press reported the rabbit at 56 feet long and 10,000 pounds, and the airport's art page gives it as 56 feet tall and 10,000 pounds. Kreysler & Associates of American Canyon fabricated it, and the firm says it hangs from seven cables fastened to the terminal ceiling. According to the Sacramento Bee in 2024, Argent first designed it in fiberglass but switched to aluminum to meet the airport's safety requirements; its red surface is made of 1,446 machine-cut aluminum triangles over an aluminum armature, and the granite suitcase weighs 17,000 pounds. The Bee gives the rabbit's height as more than 16 feet, while CBS News Sacramento lists it as 19.
