FIELD GUIDE

The story

Florida marked the nation's 250th anniversary with a series of statues, and this bronze Lady Columbia is the one in Lake City. Governor Ron DeSantis unveiled it in Lake City, the Columbia County seat, on 27 August 2026, saying he was proud to unveil "the latest in a series of statues commemorating America's 250th anniversary". Sculptor Austin Weishel says the figure stands more than 8.5 feet tall and holds a flame for liberty in one hand and, held out rather than worn, a laurel wreath for honour in the other, standing on a half moon. According to the sculptor, four bronze plaques, each 5 feet long and 19 inches tall, show the Florida state seal, the territorial period, growth and development, and Florida today and tomorrow. It stands in Wilson Park.
