FIELD GUIDE
The story
La Crosse has more than one statue of King Gambrinus, the legendary patron of beer and brewing, and one has been tied to the city's main brewery since 1939.
The La Crosse County Historical Society says Gambrinus was first the mascot of the John Gund Brewery and later of G. Heileman Brewing, and that Heileman bought a statue of him in 1939 from a New Orleans brewery that had closed after Prohibition. Heileman's king stood 15 feet tall, weighed 2,000 pounds and was placed in front of the brewery's main offices. Wisconsin 101 adds that it is concrete, that its sculptor and date are unknown, that Heileman paid $100, and that it was painted with a purple tunic, red ermine-trimmed cape and golden crown, with one foot on a golden keg. ExploreLaCrosse says a plaque beside it calls him a "valiant soldier of the 15th century".
