FIELD GUIDE
The story
The Jefferson Davis Monument is a concrete obelisk at Fairview, in western Kentucky, near the place where Jefferson Davis, later president of the Confederate States of America, was born in 1808. Kentucky State Parks describes it as a 351-foot obelisk built a century ago on a limestone foundation, within Jefferson Davis State Historic Site, which it describes as his birthplace.
Kentucky State Parks lists a museum on the grounds. In July 2015 the Associated Press reported that lightning struck the obelisk, sending chunks flying; a state spokesman said the damage was minor and not structural. The Kentucky Atlas gives its completion as 1924.
