FIELD GUIDE
The story
Hootie and the Blowfish formed at the University of South Carolina in 1985, when guitarist Mark Bryan met singer-songwriter Darius Rucker, according to the Five Points Association. WIS reported in 2010 that the band's 1994 debut album, Cracked Rear View, had sold more than 16 million copies.
The monument stands at the corner of Santee Avenue and Harden Street in Five Points, blocks from the university. The association calls Harden Street 'Hootie Boulevard'; WIS reported in 2010 that the Santee Avenue stretch through Five Points would receive that honorary name. The association describes a granite plaque set into the ground in the shape of a guitar pick, surrounded by stainless-steel spires reaching 17 feet, with metal musical stanzas running through the ribbons. It forms an archway over part of the street. Artists Matthew Kramer and Chris Stuyck made it, and it was unveiled in October 2010 as part of the band's 25th-anniversary celebration.
