The story

Herd Bull is a bison skull about 24 feet wide, welded from recycled steel, and it was made in 1990 and has long stood on the lawn of the Montana Historical Society in Helena. Visit Helena credits it to Sioux artist Benji Daniels and Billings sculptor James J. Hadcock, completed in 1990, and gives its weight as two and a half tons and its height as seven feet.
Its beginnings were underwater. Montana Historical Society curator Amanda Trum told KTVH in 2020 that Daniels had been scuba diving with friends in the Missouri River, where they found a number of bison skulls, and that this became the inspiration. He built the sculpture from scrap steel from the Cenex refinery in Laurel, where he worked at the time. A plaque beside it calls it a symbol of the life-ways of Montana's first inhabitants, the spirit of the West for those who followed, and the impact of nature on all who have called Montana home. A 2015 magazine report said it had sat on the museum's front lawn since 1995, and that Daniels believes it to be the largest bison skull in the world; that claim is his own.
