FIELD GUIDE

The story

A sawmill waste burner that once glowed day and night over the Blackfoot Valley now stands in a sculpture park in Lincoln, Montana, as an artwork, a tribute to the timber industry and a summer concert hall.
The Delaney & Sons sawmill at Landers Fork was the largest and most modern in the Upper Blackfoot Valley, according to artist Kevin O'Dwyer. It employed more than 100 men in the summer of 1965 and closed in 1971, leaving the teepee burner, where wood waste was burned, standing. Lewis and Clark County's blog describes a structure framed with iron and steel and skinned with sheet metal that weighs 20,000 pounds, stands 90 feet tall and is 45 feet across.
