FIELD GUIDE

The story

A laid-off foundry worker's backyard fish pond grew into a folk-art environment of more than fifty structures, and it still stands where he built it.
Harry George "Ben" Hartman (1883 to 1944) began work in 1932, after losing his job at a Springfield foundry at the age of 48, according to Ohio Magazine in 2015. Over the following years he filled his lot at 1905 Russell Avenue with more than 50 structures. The magazine says the first miniature building, a copy of New York's Little Church Around the Corner, came soon after the pond. Later came replicas of Independence Hall and the White House, a 12-foot castle with a drawbridge and moat, Noah's Ark, and a Death Valley scene where 20 mules pull two wagons, a reference to the radio programme Death Valley Days.
