FIELD GUIDE

The story

A 35-foot stilt walker looms over Tempe City Hall, and he portrays a real person: Harry Mitchell, who sat on the Tempe City Council from 1970 to 1978 and was the city’s mayor from 1978 to 1994, according to KTAR. The sculpture, Harry Above the Crowd, is also called Above the Crowd and was made in 1998 by John Randall Nelson, an artist Downtown Tempe describes as living in Tempe. Nelson’s website lists it as steel, ceramic tile and concrete, 35 by 14 by 14 feet.
The stilts are the idea. Downtown Tempe says Mitchell is portrayed as a stilt walker to emphasise his “heightened sense of potential, performance and accomplishment,” and that the inverted pyramid in his hands symbolizes Tempe City Hall. Nelson’s site quotes Where Magazine in 2015 noting that live stilt walkers regularly stroll Mill Avenue during the Tempe Festival of the Arts.
