The story
Happy Half Wit is a muffler-man-type statue with a head inspired by Alfred E. Neuman, the MAD magazine character, that was reported at an automotive shop in Beaumont, Texas, as recently as 2023.
Its identity is a puzzle. The Beaumont Convention and Visitors Bureau and Roadside America tie the head to Neuman, while enthusiast sites call the figure a Mortimer Snerd, one of the statues International Fiberglass made, essentially Paul Bunyan figures with a different head, believed to date from about 1967. The bureau described it in 2016 as about 25 feet tall, while one enthusiast site gives a little over 21 feet for the Snerd statues generally.
