FIELD GUIDE
The story
Casey, Illinois, now has a row of record-sized objects, and the wind chime on East Main Street is where they began. Jim Bolin, whose family owns the pipeline and tank maintenance firm Bolin Enterprises, wrote in Guideposts that his crew built it between jobs from recycled pipeline, after the sound of wind chimes gave him the idea of making one tall enough to break a world record. Arts Midwest reported in 2025 that the previous largest was 27 feet long, according to Bolin. The Big Things Small Town website gives 54 feet tall with a longest tube of 42 feet; the Epoch Times gave 56 feet and 16,932 pounds in April 2026. Guinness World Records lists five metal tubes hung 14.94 metres (49 feet) from the ground and dates the record to 15 December 2012, while the builders' site says the frame went up on 17 November 2011 and the chimes were added on 15 December 2011. According to Bolin in Guideposts, the welder used the ichthus and the Star of David for the braces, a cross tops the structure, and he and his wife chose Romans 1:16 as its scripture. Because Guinness requires an object to perform its function, the tubes had to sound, and it takes wind of six miles per hour or more to move them. Bolin then put signs along Interstate 70, and out-of-state cars began to appear. The Epoch Times reported in April 2026 that the town now has 12 Guinness records and more than 20 other big sculptures, and that Bolin died in January 2026. The chime stands beside the former tea shop his family opened, now a restaurant, and visitors can pull a rope to set it swinging.
