FIELD GUIDE

The story

Casey, Illinois, is a small Clark County town that has built a reputation on oversized objects, and its rocking chair is the one that had to move to qualify. The World's Largest Rocking Chair stands at 117 East Main Street. According to the Big Things Small Town website, it is 56 feet tall and weighs 46,200 pounds; Arts Midwest, writing in July 2025, gave the weight as over 46,000 pounds.
The chair is one of nearly 30 large-scale works made from repurposed material around Casey by local business owner Jim Bolin and his crew at Bolin Enterprises, a project known as Big Things Small Town. The website says the chair proved the most difficult of the world-record attempts, took two years to complete and claimed the title on 20 October 2015. To earn the 'largest' designation it needed to rock, and the website says it took ten men to achieve that. The headrest and armrests are carved and stained, with a dove of peace at the centre of the headrest and olive branches on the armrests.
