FIELD GUIDE

The story

Rise is a tūī with a five-metre wingspan, and it is placed where a tūī would actually be.
The sculpture stands above restored wetlands on Te Awa Lifecare land beside the Te Awa River Ride, the cycle trail that follows the Waikato River. Tūī are nectar feeders, noisy, iridescent, and closely tied to the health of the bush and wetland they feed in – so siting a monumental one over a wetland restoration rather than in a car park or a main street makes the artwork an argument about the land underneath it.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Rise is a monumental tūī sculpture with a five-metre wingspan sited on the Te Awa River Ride through restored wetlands on Te Awa Lifecare land near Cambridge. It is one of six artworks that make up the site's Cambridge precinct art trail.
ACCESS
Rise is a trail-side sculpture in the restored wetlands on Te Awa Lifecare land, on the Velodrome-to-Cambridge section of the Te Awa River Ride. The stored object point is a host-site reference rather than a surveyed sculpture coordinate. Follow the public cycle trail and current Te Awa guidance; direct navigation to a preferred trail access is withheld until that approach is independently map-checked.
