FIELD GUIDE

The story

Michael Parekōwhai found a little-known legend in the Waikato Museum and built an eight-metre sculpture out of it.
The story is of a servant dog that cuts a pathway so the healing waters of Tongariro can reach an ailing Taupiri – the creation account of the Waikato River. Parekōwhai came across it in the museum's own collection, and Tongue of the Dog, installed in 2016, is the result: the tongue of the sculpture forming the river's course.
