FIELD GUIDE
The story
A giant fibreglass shrimp tops Nick's Kitchen & Beach Bar on Seawall Boulevard in Galveston, Texas. The Galveston Daily News reported in September 2024 that the statue was damaged by Hurricane Beryl in July that year. It spent the following months being repaired at J.P. Fiberglass Repairs in La Marque before a crane lifted it back onto the restaurant's rooftop on Friday 20 September 2024, a moment the paper's caption described as 'the iconic shrimp statue' being lifted into place.
The restaurant at 3802 Seawall Boulevard began, according to its website, as a coffee shop called The Chart Room more than 60 years ago, became Casey's in 1986 and took the Nick's name in May 2013. A local guide, Yes, Galveston!, tells visitors looking for the beachfront location to 'just look for the giant shrimp'.
