FIELD GUIDE

The story

A giant blue crab sat on the roof of Gaido's Seafood Restaurant on Galveston's Seawall Boulevard when The Daily News reported on it in July 2024, and Nick Gaido has joked to The Texas Bucket List that it was caught in Galveston Bay.

Gaido's first opened its doors to the public in 1911, according to its own history page, and in February 2025 Hoodline reported that the James Beard Foundation had named it an America's Classics winner. Nick Gaido told The Daily News in July 2024 that the statue had survived every tropical event since it was erected in 1960. After Hurricane Beryl struck on 8 July 2024 the crab had no visible damage, the paper reported, and Gaido added "That thing’s built like a Corvette". Gaido said the family takes it down every ten years for repairs.
