FIELD GUIDE

The story

A steel quarter with George Washington's profile stands near the entrance to Down River Golf Course in Everett, built by technical-school students working with a local fabricator. It is one of five Roadside Giants that the Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridor placed along Pennsylvania's 200-mile stretch of the highway, each made by a county career and technology centre; the others are a Packard, a gas pump, a bicycle built for two and a 1920 Selden pickup truck. The Bedford County Technical Center students chose a quarter, the corridor says, because of Bedford's connection to Washington, who marched into Bedford in 1794. Lincoln Highway News reported in June 2009 that the piece was made at MDL Manufacturing in Bedford, where the students laser-cut its details, and that planning meetings began in March 2008. The students were due to add landscaping and stone at the site that autumn, and the corridor lists local firms including New Enterprise Stone & Lime and Rockland Manufacturing among their partners. It was dedicated that spring, and a culinary arts student made a matching cake. The 2009 report called it 20 feet tall; the corridor's current listing gives only the weight. In July 2025 the corridor still listed it among its quirky roadside stops and said most are open year-round and free to view. The course is a business property, so view the quarter from the entrance.
