This Big Thing is recorded as still being here.
A cast-iron peanut roughly 6 feet tall, mounted atop a 4-foot metal post (approximately 10 feet total), stands at 7801 Edmund Highway (SC Highway 302) in Pelion, South Carolina, serving as the town's welcome sign. Pelion farmers have grown and harvested peanuts for over 100 years, and the town has hosted the annual South Carolina Peanut Party -- celebrating the state's official snack food, boiled peanuts -- since 1982. The Pelion peanut is one of several competing roadside 'world's largest peanut' claims across the US (the article notes Dothan, Alabama's cluster of over 60 fiberglass peanuts individually exceeds Pelion's monument, so the superlative claim itself is disputed).
