FIELD GUIDE

The story

The South Carolina State House grounds in Columbia hold a bronze figure of Strom Thurmond, erected while its subject was still alive and amended after his death.
Historic Columbia records that the monument was installed on 4 December 1999 and designed by William Behrends. The figure is nine feet tall and stands on an eight-foot base. The Strom Thurmond Monument Commission, chaired by state senator John Courson, raised $850,000 privately, largely from corporate donors. According to Historic Columbia it was the second monument to a living person on the State House grounds; the first was for James F. Byrnes.
