FIELD GUIDE
The story
Destination Marlborough's directions to the restaurant are, essentially, look for the giant pot of mussels on the roof.
Havelock calls itself the greenshell mussel capital of the world, and unlike most such claims it is close to literally true. The Marlborough Sounds produce the overwhelming majority of New Zealand's greenshell mussels – a species found nowhere else, farmed on longlines through the drowned valleys of the Sounds – and Havelock, at the head of Pelorus Sound, is the town the industry runs out of. The barges and the processing are right there.
So a giant pot of mussels above The Mussel Pot restaurant on the main road is not a novelty. It is the local catch, in the local cooking vessel, above the place that serves it.
The pot form is a better choice than a single giant mussel would have been. A mussel on its own is a closed shell, dark and not especially legible from a car; a pot heaped with open shells reads instantly as food, and it tells a passing driver what is available inside rather than merely what is farmed outside.
Havelock sits on the road between Blenheim and Nelson, so nearly everyone crossing the top of the South Island passes through it. A rooftop object on that route is well placed.
Who built the pot, and when, is not something the record has kept.
