The story
The whole company started because a man near retirement read a label he did not like.
Pic Picot found sugar in his favourite peanut butter, so he bought a bunch of peanuts, roasted them in his oven and put them in a cheap blender. The blender burnt out. The peanut butter inside it, by his own account, was staggering. That was the beginning of Pic's Peanut Butter, which has since become one of New Zealand's better-known food brands.
The giant jar outside Pic's Peanut Butter World at Stoke, on the edge of Nelson, is the sculpture that story earned. A 2021 photograph documents it clearly at the factory, and the site operates as a visitor destination as well as a production plant – you can watch peanut butter being made.
That combination is the interesting part. Most oversized food objects advertise something made elsewhere, or something grown in the district and processed somewhere anonymous. This one stands at the actual factory, in front of the actual machinery, and the product inside the building is the product depicted outside it.
Nelson is a good place for it. The region has an unusual concentration of small food and drink producers who sell direct, and a factory that opens its doors is following a well-established local pattern.
The record does not carry the date or the builder.

The giant jar is a prominent exterior feature of Pic’s Peanut Butter World. A 2021 Wikimedia photograph clearly documents the jar at the factory, and Pic’s remains a current operating New Zealand brand and visitor destination.
ACCESS
