FIELD GUIDE
The story
Interlake Tourism says the mosquito monument in Komarno, Manitoba, is a weather vane: "Don't be alarmed if it moves; the statue is actually a weather vane that rotates with the wind."
The Manitoba Historical Society lists it as the Giant Mosquito Monument (Komarno, RM of Rockwood). The society says artist Marlene Magnusson Hourd designed and built it between 1984 and 1986, calls it "a stone and metal monument of a large mosquito," and says it was unveiled in October 1986. It says the monument commemorates the name of the community, a Ukrainian word that means "lots of mosquitos." Interlake Tourism, on an undated page, says the name "translates to 'mosquito-infested' in Ukrainian" and calls Komarno the "self-declared 'Mosquito Capital of the World.'" Discover Magazine calls Komarno the Mosquito Capital of Canada.
