FIELD GUIDE
The story
A pair of large garter snake statues, which the RM of Armstrong calls S-s-sam and S-s-sara, stands beside the Interlake Pioneer Trail in Inwood, Manitoba. Interlake Tourism says they were erected in Inwood Park to honour the massive number of red-sided garter snakes that call the area home. Travel Manitoba, in an April 2025 article, places them on the northeast side of town and ties them to the nearby Narcisse Snake Dens, where it says the world's largest concentration of red-sided garter snakes occurs every spring. Interlake Tourism adds that the snakes hibernate in limestone crevices in dens over the winter.
The RM of Armstrong gives the statue as about 15 feet tall, with S-s-sam roughly 25 feet long and S-s-sara roughly 29 feet long. It says the snakes use rebar, metal lath, polyurethane foam and fibreglass, on a base of granite and limestone rocks, and that Inwood volunteers raised the funds for the materials and built the statue.
