FIELD GUIDE
The story
Six hundred grass skirts, thousands of bamboo skewers and 150 litres of paint. That is what a 9.4-metre wizard is made of, at least when the deadline is a film premiere.
Gandalf went up across the frontage of Wellington's Embassy Theatre in November 2012 for the world premiere of The Hobbit, and the design came from Dan Hennah, the film's own production designer – so the sculpture was not a licensed approximation but a piece of work by the person responsible for how the films looked in the first place.
