FIELD GUIDE
The story
Bigfoot is the mascot of Portland's Freakybuttrue Peculiarium, an art-gallery-cum-oddity-museum on NW Thurman Street. Willamette Week reported in 2019 that the owner, a former Laika animator, crafted the figure from metal framing, plenty of fabric and stuffing, and two cement blocks for feet, and described it as the museum's mascot. Heights vary by account: Willamette Week gave 9 feet; Seattle Refined described it in 2017 as a 'full-scale ten foot tall' Bigfoot; a September 2025 article by That Oregon Life also says ten feet, while a Family Destinations Guide piece from the same month estimated eight or nine feet. Willamette Week described it in 2019 as towering over the entrance. The museum describes itself as about 1,800 square feet of collections, original art, interactive photo ops and cryptids, with no stairs. The museum listed admission at $10 in September 2025. Opening hours change by season, so check the museum's website before you go.
